Everybody that knows me knows that I am a HUGE Halo fan. When I found out Marvel Comics was going to publish the limited series that would bridge the ending of Halo 2 to the beginning of Halo 3, I was more then excited! This was the first comic that I have purchased in years.
The story kicks of with Master Chief riding in an enemy ‘Ghost’ and crashing into the enemy’s bridge and shooting away at brutes, one of the alien races in the Halo universe. He is taking them out with only two SMGs, something I do in the game. After a few panels of gun shooting and amazement all through two pages of action, we get a single page of Master Chief looking at the eyes of hundreds of brutes. Unfortunately, the action takes us to the storyline.
Brutes were taking out all the human military soldiers (or the UNSC). One soldier was an idiot and opened up high big mouth and announced to the very monster that was torturing him that they won’t find a key. Why do we always have to have a weasel on the team with a big mouth? It makes no freaking sense to me as a story teller. Is the Brute going to let him go after he spills the beans? These brutes didn’t even know about the key untildumb-ass mentioned something about it. After jabbing the narcing marine in the arm with a knife, he named off Cleveland. The funniest part was the Brute said “Cleve. Land. What is a Cleve?”
We get introduced to two humans, a guy and some ugly woman, in the paradise city known as Cleveland. That’s when the brutes crashed the party taking out civilians and UNSC troops. The pair get chased around, dodging explosions like they are in a Die Hard movie, practically surviving everything from miss bullet shots to back draft fire. They might as well slap an ending on this book already.
After sitting through through the scene of the Brutes chasing the humans (who surrendered to the brutes), we finally get to see Master Chief again only to see him eat some bullets and falls to the ground. Man, if I want to see Master Chief fail, somebody get me a controller and let me play Halo! There’s even a needler being pointed at him which is absolutely nuts. This story is officially weak.
We end the story with Chief laying on the ground, a brute mumbling gibberish about the Key of Osanalan and the brute put his foot on Chief’s chest and meanwhile on earth the humans are being treated with their lives to where this key is.
Final thoughts: I believe the story is weak so far. So predictable and I don’t know if this book can reach the same enthusiasm I have for the game.
Will I pick up the next issue: Yes
Why? Because it is Halo. I hope this story picks up or else I will consider it a bust.
